Who is Cassandra?
A figure of ancient mythology, Cassandra (also known as 'Alexandra') was the favourite daughter of Priam and Hecuba, King and Queen of Troy.
The God Apollo bestowed her with the power of prophecy. When she refused his amorous advances, he put a curse on her, so that she would never be believed. Trojans considered her insane and her warnings were disregarded - Troy lost the war against the Greeks as a result.
The name Cassandra has become a symbol for those who risk speaking what they see, and knowing what inevitably must come from it (the prophetic voice). Cassandras are not only mythological. They live among us and come from all walks of life. There is a Cassandra in each of us.
